About the Riverbed Farming Alliance

The Riverbed Farming Alliance is a membership based forum with the objective

  • to promote riverbed farming in Nepal;
  • to exchange experiences and enhance inter-organisational learning;
  • support to the Government of Nepal in the development of a national riverbed farming strategy.


Up to date the Riverbed Farming Alliance has implemented or initiated the following activities:

  • Strategy Development Workshop on Riverbed Farming, Dhangadi, August 2011 (completed)
  • Riverbed Farming Alliance web page (completed)
  • Development of Riverbed Farming Guidelines (initiated; by Ministry of Local Development in collaboration with the Riverbed Farming Alliance)
  • Riverbed mapping in two pilot districts, Dang and Kailali (initiated)
  • National Riverbed Farming Workshop, Kathmandu, 2012 (planned)





News & Events

On 10 January 2012 the Riverbed Farming Alliance members signed a Memorandum of Understanding. This Memorandum will support the collaboration and the implementation of common activities in 2012 and beyond.

Case Studies

Case Study 4: Pano Devi Mukhiya, Bokraha-1, Siraha

Pano Devi Mukhiya, 35, resident of Bhokraha Village Development Committee ward no. 1, is an extremely poor woman. Her husband added insult to injury when he divorced Pano Devi and married another woman. She needed a company in order to ward off social stigma and increased vulnerability. Out of compulsion, then 25 years old Pano Devi chose to marry a 65-year-old man. The old man had 0.5 hectare of land. 


Case Study 2: Phoolpati Chaudhary (34), Urma-7, Kailali.

Before starting riverbed farming, Ms. Chaudhary with her whole family earned hardly NRs. 12,000 annually by cultivating cereal crops on 4 kattha of own land and 5 kattha of shared land.
